How to take your Canada Visa Photo (IRCC) at home

  1. Stand in front of a plain white or light-coloured wall with even light, so there are no shadows on your face or the background.
  2. Take off glasses, face the camera straight on with your eyes open and mouth closed, and keep your hair away from your face.
  3. Use a photo taken in the last 6 months.
  4. Drop the photo above to get a JPEG of at least 420 × 540 pixels between 60 KB and 240 KB, with the head 31–36 mm (about 69–80% of the photo height).

Common reasons your Canada Visa Photo (IRCC) is rejected

  • Smaller than 420 × 540 pixels
  • File under 60 KB or over 240 KB, or not a JPEG
  • Head too small or too large — the chin-to-crown height should be roughly 372–432 pixels on a 420 × 540 photo
  • Shadows on the face or background, or glasses
  • A blurry, dark or heavily compressed image

Uploading your photo to IRCC

For visitor visas, study permits and work permits applied for online, you upload the digital photo with your IRCC application.

If you are asked to give biometrics, a visa application centre also takes your fingerprints and a photo, but you still upload your own photo with the application.
