How to take your UK Passport Photo at home

  1. Get someone else to take the photo — a selfie or a photo taken at arm’s length usually shows the wrong angle and distortion.
  2. Stand in front of a plain light grey or cream wall with even light, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you.
  3. Take off glasses, face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, mouth closed and eyes open, and keep hair away from your eyes.
  4. Use a photo taken in the last month — UK passport photos have to be recent, even if you look the same.
  5. Drop the photo above to get a digital file of at least 600 × 750 pixels for the online application, or the 35 × 45 mm print sheet for a paper form.

Common reasons your UK Passport Photo is rejected

  • Smaller than 600 × 750 pixels, or a file under 50 KB or over 10 MB
  • Shadows on the face or background, or a background that is patterned or too dark
  • Glasses, sunglasses, or hair covering the eyes
  • Head tilted, not looking at the camera, or a big smile or open mouth
  • Beauty filters, retouching that changes your face, or a blurry or grainy photo
  • A photo older than one month

Using your photo in a UK passport application

Online: you upload a digital photo as part of the application. Photo booths and shops that support the digital service can give you a photo code instead of a file.

Paper form: send two identical printed photos, 35 × 45 mm. Print the 4 × 6 inch sheet from the tool above and cut out two copies.
